A Dash Through Life

I just heard part of the speech delivered by the Rev. Al Sharpton when he was here in Barbados and thought his idea of the “dash” on a person’s epitaph was very true. I leaned that this may not have originated with him but where ever the origin, I thank you for the unique idea.

A Dash Through Life

All the hustle and bustle and then we

Die and what do others see

A dash on our epitaph to represent

So many things done in our lives spent

How unfortunate that people never know

The importance of our lives when they casually go

How succinct to mark our many years

Represented with the dash that appears

On the headstone between born and died

Usually a dash is understood worldwide

Got many meanings but none will summarize

How a man lived, whether kind, peaceful and wise

Life should not be reported so briefly

I see a dash between the years and now I see

Folk like me who once had so much to give

Epitomized with a dash representing how they chose to live
