In Tribute To Euclid Carmen Jones

Do you remember Jones shop in Eagle hall where you can go and get midnight snacks after out partying? I was fortunate to have known the family and more so to know that my father knew Mr. Jones and liked him dearly.  Through him I got to hear many stories of the family well below the surface of the shop. It is with great sadness and deep sympathy that I learn of the passing of this very fine gentleman but I have solace in knowing that he offered his life to Christ. May his family and friend get great comfort in knowing that he is now with the Creator.

In Tribute To Euclid Carmen Jones

Trusted Old And Faithful Friend

In dark times and troubled days

Not many real bonds were forged deserving of praise

Then came unusual grace on April 5, 1916

Resembling a sincere, kind spirit who as an early teen

In hope to assist with finance he left St. Davis School early

Boarded Hall Police Station gave him a job as one to work as a handy

Ultimately he tasted his first kind of shop keeping skills

Taking on management of de renowned merchant’s shops ready with frills

Enlisted in the Navy, World War II had given international mêlée

Turbulence in towns who abided fervently peaceful each day

On returning home and reaching safely, recalling his tennis from then

Exploits on the courts as tennis playing was a talent and he beat many men

Unions were great and after driving taxi for years there were many

Courted his small darling Olga from then and on Dec 20. 1947, matrimony

Lived in Westbury Road just at a modestly short distance away

Is Eagle Hall where he did establish Jones Bar and Grocery one day

Did but inclined to sea life he first became Donkeyman in the Harrison’s Line

Coal shoveling and loading kept the heat and steam and engine running fine

All of five years on the “Invincible” offered him a place

Regular meals and pay but he later returned home to embrace

More family life in a place where he could have a more fixed abode

Enjoy home raising a family and not the life “on the road”

No more travels to far off lands India, Africa, South America and more

Jones quickly became a household name and in his every door

Obliged customers were appreciative for extended opening hours

None of his entrepreneurial skills trumped his noticeable parental powers

Every one loved Jonesie for his generous, considerate way

Savior he served your will, loved your people and so we know he’s with you today
