Tribute To Uncle Gordon

He was a small frail man who lived on a little hill. I never knew enough about Uncle Gordon but the few memories that I have of him are vivid and the things he left behind memorable. On thing I do know of him is that he always welcomed a visit and was very genuinely grateful for what little things we gave him. One does not have to be of means to give generously, uncle Gordon gave with abundance. Our Deepest Sympathy to the Family and Friends of Gordon Haynes Stanford who died peacefully at the QEH on March 21, 2010 at age 84

Tribute To Uncle Gordon

Today we bid farewell but he leaves behind

Real and tangible legacies of unusual kind

I see in my mind’s eye the hat stand

Brightly varnished picture frames made by his hand

Under Joan’s roof was a remarkable hand rail

There are many chairs and each one tells my uncle’s tale

Even though small in frame he was bursting in energy

Took great pride in being a Joiner and worked relentlessly

Odd times you might find him when he was at play

Uncle Gordon loved the English styled flute and in his way

Never stopped making a joyful noise

Created flutes from paw paw shanks as musical toys

Loved to be a free spirit and believed in human rights

Expressed himself artistically and freely flew his kites

Gordon had long ago found an extraordinary thirst

On Yule Tide he lit up his house, he was amongst the first

Reading the Bible wasn’t his practice yet he loved to hear

Daily verses read on the radio and from me when I was there

On the hill this welcoming and grateful man always waved good-bye

Now he can’t, I’ll wave, his legacies and spirit shall never die
