Life Sentence

Lots of years incarcerated and I was not well

I must have been taken away that day when I fell

For years I recounted the deeds I had done

Evils to friends and family, to strangers, just for the fun

So I had never thought I would get beyond the gate

Except, I opened my eyes, old and bent, in this new state

Nothing familiar but the constant cries

The heat of the day melt the tears from my eyes

Each moment seemed to get hotter and I was dying with thirst

No one brought me a drink then I pondered, which place was worst

Couldn’t sleep, I didn’t find a place to rest my head

Eventually, friends came crying - but how? They were all long dead!
