Caribbean Christmas

This is the first Christmas type poem for this season and it was from listening to the folk at Starcom that I found myself writing one this early. Not only from the date but I wrote it in the early part of the morning even though I posted it so late. I sent it off to the acting A.G there.

Caribbean Christmas

Can you tell me uncle Mike

An old time Christmas, what was it like

Reindeer didn’t pull Santa back then

I know you told me once but tell me again

Back then child we did have rain dear

But not much, the weather was good that time of the year

Every child used to take a skillet to  collect beach sand

And the wire handle used to cut into yah hand

Nah more, the law stopped that and the collecting of beach stones

Christmas time we adorn gardens wid dem now dah’s one uh de unknowns

Had snow on the mountain too, bet yah did nevah guess

Right at the corner of the garden the plant bloomed in its finest

I remember the freshly varnished furniture and floor

Sorrel drink, jug jug, hams with cloves, pineapple and more

The mattresses and pillows getting new stuffing

My mother’s great cake and plain pudding

At that time back then children listened and weren’t hard ears

So remember this child on Christmas fah de rest uh yah years
