Alzheimer And Old-timer

Yes this is a day late but what do you expect. Alzheimer affects millions of people throughout the western world and even though we have seen this illness for decades ravish the old, we are still useless against it. All the research thus far has been futile. What then are we doing to put a cap on this disease? The one thing that we can do is to start understanding, not the disease particularly but the people inflicted by it and what they are obviously going through

Alzheimer And Old-timer

A long time ago I would boast

Little trivialities of things I love most

Zero tolerance for others who differed from me

Had no need for cigarettes, alcohol or any frivolity

Everyone around me respected my space

In my presence my restrictions they would embrace

Made me the exception and for a while, like nobility

Encouraged their friends too to treat me with dignity

Recently things have changed, I’m not treated the same

All eyes are on me with an air of shame

No one accepts my opinion any more

Don’t even let me out, on my own, through the door

On shopping days they keep changing groceries around

Like the vegetables and fruit and the breads can’t be found

Don’t know why the radio stations are always so late

Their programs are in shambles and are left to fate

I used to call my niece Betsy and my nephew Edwin

My niece no longer answers and my nephew gives a grin

Except for special days I only see one friend Denise

Recently they celebrate my birthday whenever they please
