Crutches Can Hold You Up

I heard this story from my mother this morning at the beach and when I was showering after returning the words to this poem started to appear. As usual, I can’t type fast enough to record everything and I’m restricted to write the few words I caught. I hope I’ve done this story justice sine it is a very important story.

Crutches Can Hold You Up

Calamities define his last difficult year

Right leg was lost rescuing a child in despair

Under the vehicle he laid in pain

The child was saved but Bob would never walk on two legs again

Couldn’t go to work and soon lost his job

He lost his insurance, lost his mortgage and soon Bob

Even lost his wife who always stood by his side

She married him 30 years ago but could no longer abide

Caring for Bob who also lost his emotional spine

And drank to a stupor with beer and wine

Never seeming to care for what lies ahead

He behaved like the world would be better off if he were dead

One day he sat on the barstool with his crutches there

Looking strange and not drinking, bent over in prayer

Dear Lord, he said, I lost it all but did I lose you

You have not been around recently, Did I lose you too?

Outburst of gun fire had people storming out

Until outside in safety Bob’s friends would shout

Unanimously, Bob, your crutches, how did you get over there

Praise you Lord! Bob said as he fell, “You’ve always been here!”
