I Should Have But Did Not

I frequent the same place on the beach and everyday, I see the same people. Some people come on weekdays only and others on weekends only. I go all week so I am the natural overlap. I watch those who bathe close by, those who swim out into the deep. I talk to most of them but only with a polite hello. I admire many who are so consistent in their habit, a healthy habit.

I Should Have But Did Not

I see them walk together each day

Sharing the mornings in a special way

Having these moments all on their own

On the beach they walked on mornings alone

Under provocation he kept his cool

Like once when he was attacked by some little fool

Didn’t fight back but defended with class

He scarcely flinch when these villains walk pass

And when she stopped and exercised

Very patiently he waited, uncompromised

Eager for nothing and patiently

By her side he waited until she was ready

Used to hear about the ball and chain

The short leash and that you’ll never be free again

Dog house stays and no friends over to visit with you

I heard of the strict manners and bad tasting foods too

Didn’t remember these when he saw the conga fish

No other food smelt tastier than this carrion dish

One stern “Put it down!”, “Drop It! she pulled him into the sea

The dog growled as if to say, No, “I’m taking this with me!”
