The Artocarpus altilis

This Great Silent Doctor, the Artocarpus altilis or breadfruit is one of the most impressive foods. I used to think that they weren’t very versatile and perhaps only really enjoyed them when pickled. I started getting them made into chips and can never get enough of them. They never lose their crisp and never need salt or dips. I found that they even generated internal body heat that kept me warm in the chill of the stadiums.

The Artocarpus altilis

They say the tree can reach over 60ft high

Have from 50-200 breadfruits as a seasonal supply

Extensive uses for this great plant but few of these

Are exploited to the max by our island colonies

Recently I wondered why can’t we

Take the plant to our neighbors in Haiti

Our brothers there are malnourished

Couldn’t the breadfruit help their impoverish

A long time ago I learnt that we might

Reap more of God’s foods to end our plight

Plant more productive trees and have less concrete

Use vital space for greens and things we can eat

Silent Doctors like the Breadfruit tree

Are filled with more uses than ever known to me

Like using the bark, the leaves and the flowers

Taking breadfruit for its medicinal powers

I love breadfruit made into chips

Love them without any salt or fattening dips

I get breadfruits brought on Saturdays to my door

So I get mashed cou cou and eat breadfruit chips galore
