Calypsonians

What’s all this talk about phrasing and how is Malik more of a Calypsonian than Smokey? I am so confused by the musicology of this art form and Im a Bajan!

I wonder about all you non Caribbean people and how you feel about our music

Calypsonians

Can’t understand this kind of music

A phrasing rendition sung rhythmic

Lyrical devices with ambiguous flair

Youngsters gyrating and oldsters beware

Pan players tempting the upper body

Shoulders picking the beat and starting to shimmy

On stages performers behaving rude

Nebulous suggestions of acts more lewd

I feel the music tickle my spine

And involuntarily I feel like I want to wind

No! Stop that! I can still hear my grandmother shout.

She never wanted me to hear this music and let my inner self out
