BOB - Barack Obama Bowed

There is lots of chatter about President Barack Obama greeting the Saudi King with an apparent bow. I beg to differ to the general consensus. I know the Bible suggests that we should bow to no other and that the American President is expected to bow to no other head of state. For me a bow is a mental disposition and generally those that bow to Kings are unlikely to be able to shake the hands of Kings. There was also a lot of discussion about Michelle Obama’s hug of the Queen. Later we learnt there was nothing to it. These gestures are too often misunderstood by observers. What I know from following the Obamas is that however respectful they are for culture and protocol, they are never subservient.

BOB – Barack Obama Bowed

Bending forward from the waist or at the neck

Are signs of greetings, acknowledgement and on last check

Respect, consent and yes submission too

All characteristics I accept so why can’t you

Call it like it was and realize that he

Kept his head held high and his dignity

Obama wasn’t being subservient when he shook the King’s hand

But his height,  using both hands and where he chose to stand

All contributed to his bending forward but was it a bow

Might his gesture have been mistaken somehow

And what of his head lowering when he met the Queen

Bowed then too I presume but was this not seen

Obama does things differently from all Presidents before

Walks an unusual road and he bring much more

End all the nick picking, open your heart and you too will see

Dipping while shaking the King’s hand wasn’t bowing to the Saudi
