Barbados

There is much we should share especially with the young if we are to pass on vital information about our heritage and keep some things alive. I asked a native to Barbados how the island got its name and was disturbed to hear, I don’t know.

Barbados

Bearded fig trees is how we got our name

A long time ago when the Portuguese came

Right around they saw these trees grew

Back then they call them Los Barbados and later the Island too

All that’s left now are patches of these

Don’t see much of the Bearded Fig Trees

On the Island few people know them and those who do

Should share their knowledge with me and you
