Stepping Down

When I told others, both family and fiends that I had written a poem called Stepping Down, they all had different ideas to what it was about and frankly, it was inspired by something totally different to what has been included here. The origins of this work border too close on something too personal to reveal its roots but I’m grateful to the almighty for giving me these words that though seeming shallow have a great depth and hold my secret. I hope that it may still serve to reach someone or many, in a special way.

Stepping Down

So often it is harder than you might think

Taking those first steps without a blink

Each step gets easier but the trouble’s with the first

Putting ones foot down is always the worst

People didn’t leave the burning roof though the ladder was there

I read Peter couldn’t disembark caused the waters said beware

Noises so you can’t go down the stairs in the darkened room

Giving up a position to youth spells your eventual doom

Didn’t take that step down until the bus had stopped

Once you stepped onto the platform your courage dropped

When I was young, for all these occasions I’d jump instead

Now I’m even cautious when I Stepping Down from bed
