Sandy's New Kid

One of the most miraculous moments in my life was when late one night I heard a cry . The strange thing is that where my room is, I should have been the last in the house to hear, but I was not. Underneath my parent’s window in my back yard, Sandy had given birth to pups and one was in distress. Scared as I was to touch the newborn and risk Sandy rejecting it, I had to pull it from the drain hole that left the yard. This grew up to be my most loyal friend, impossible to describe but for all those who saw the relationship they immediately saw the love.

Sandy’s New Kid

Some time in the dark of the night I heard a cry

A piercing squeal which bid me draw nigh

No lights were on and I groped around

Directed to a hole in the wall by the chilling sound

Yelping and cold and heavy in my grip

So big with white markings above the top lip

Night was short and I rushed back to the yard

Early in the morning ten pups were nursing hard

When I cautiously checked I noticed the same one

Kept steady development until it was the largest grown

I chose to keep Kid and our bond was surreal

Didn’t have another companion whose spirit I could feel
