Ten Favorite Bajan Proverbs

I call myself a Bajan because I was born and bread in Barbados, but according to my family and friends, I’m as foreign as a tourist. This is certainly true to my reading and writing Bajan dialect. I totally enjoy hearing it and wish that I had a command of it too, but I don’t. Here are some of the favorite proverbs from one of my favorite Blogs, Cheese-On-Bread.

Ten Favorite Bajan Proverbs

The Bajans speak in an unusual way

Expressing philosophically the things they say

Now I have difficulty writing the Bajan slang

Fortunately these were posted for the Blogging gang

A dull ignorant man who you rate as dense

Value this individual cause Every fool got ‘e sense

One man might have escaped but you’d better duck

Realty has it that Cat luck en' dog luck

If resources are defective what can you do now

The Bajans say When yuh en' got horse, ride cow

Even though people help, understand their design

Be sure you Don’t tek a six for a nine

A person may be deceptive but note their pedigree

Just know De berry don’ drop too far from de tree

And the more you showoff the sooner truth will prevail

Note De higher de monkey climb, de more 'e show 'e tail

Peoples’ kindness may not always be on your behalf

Remember for Bajans Evah skin-teet en' a laugh

One day you’ll find someone smarter with  tricks galore

Victory dictated that One smart dead at two smart door

Every action has consequences which are soon explicit

Remember Yuh could hide and buy ground but yuh can’t hide and wuk it

Before you risk seaward keep bearings on the shore

Safety always cause De sea ain’t got nuh back door

Thanks Khaidji for the wonderful poems and the messages they contain. Your work is awesome. I particularly love "The Ossie Moore jokes" and "10 favorite Bajan proverbs"...it took me back to growing up in Barbados and not understanding what the "older" folks meant when they used those saying..now I do, and I'm now quoting them to my younger relatives. Thanks again..keep up the good work you make me proud to be Bajan.

Thank you for you warm comments. I am glad that the ones on the local character and proverbs have appealed to you. I regret that I have not pay as diligent attention to these categories. Although we came up on Ossie jokes, they seem so hard now to find and many step outside my realms for public viewing.

Please find listed in the Seasons category, many nostalgic memories of Barbados at Christmas time, all convenient in my book BAJAN – Bells Are Jingling All Night

If you are still familiar with the Barbados National Anthem then the category BIM – Barbados Island Memories might also give you great pleasure. The poems there which were read for the Independence Day 2009 will cast you over a period of Barbados . A electronic copy is available for immediate download at Bajan E-books. I hope you find this information useful.
