An Early Morning Bite

Life’s lessons can creep up on us and bite us in the butt. In my case there was no creeping up on fortunately, no butt either. I do know that some lessons came sudden and in the strangest way and one of my most rewarding was when I was only six years old.

An Early Morning Bite

A childhood memory lingers on my mind

Not special, or tragic, sort of both combined

Early one morning mom sent me to buy

A list of things, so with obedience, I did comply

Redmans corner is where the shop was at

Left of it was where my biggest fear sat

You can’t imagine the trauma a six years old knew

My trip to this shop I’d always disliked to do

On that day it was bad, there were boys in the street

Rocks thrown, neighbors screaming and Tiger to his feet

Normally I would’ve waited but I was told hurry back

I walked slow, past like they told me but I was under attack

No! Don’t run! They shouted but my legs didn’t hear

Got bitten on my right thigh and experienced my fear

But this lesson was timely and for the rest of my life

I’ve faced fears at gun point, a man wielding a knife

That was my upbringing, because I ran away

Early morning bite filled me with courage from that day
