My Mother Was So Young But Willing

I came across this old card that I wrote for my mom years ago. I wish I was able to recover some of the other poems I sent all over. I wasn’t always keeping copies and unfortunately most were done on computers that I subsequently lost without back-ups.

Thankfully, Mommy appreciated this one and kept the original hard copy. I read it again and it all seems so real. It was truly expressive and descriptive of our lives coming up in our present home. I was only 5 years when she went to do her studies in England to become a Nurse. She qualified and returned home when I was a 13year old man. She had a first child when she was 16 years and the last of 4 when she was 22. By any standards she would have had to be quite a mother to bring us to adulthood.

Her parenting produced 3 kids that were heads of their schools and surprisingly, the youngest left school early and completed a Doctorate before age 30 at Cambridge, England. Our successes are testament to great parenting

My Mother Was So Young But Willing

Mummy got us when still a child

Young and uncertain and for a while

Made do with the comforts of Deacons Road

On her mother she depended on room and board

The times got harder with each coming day

Have four kids it was time to stray

Eden soon became our new place to rest

Replanting, restarting was an unending test

With plans for our security she opted to learn

A profession abroad that she can earn

Sufficient to be sure that we’ll never depend

Sufficient that supported our healthy upbringing

Over the time we grew to miss

Years of tuck-ins and the good night kiss

Our needs were confusing when she came back

Uncontrolled conduct and behaviour slack

Nothing was like she had foreseen

Getting to know her young grown teens

Barely recognizing the youngest at ten

Unable to fit in with he own children

The test continued and to her delight

With His hand of Love, God showed His might

In Him she trusted for the road ahead

Letting go of her worries as she prayed in bed

Love had sustained her all this while

It must have been hard to raise kids when you’re still a child

Nothing would have been possible without God’s grace

God’s love keeps us together in our Eden resting place.

I celebrate your great achievements and

Successes as a devoted Mother

Happy Mothers Days
