You can't drop a Catch

I was listening to Brass Tacks today when I heard the invited guess, David 'Joey' Harper saying that he and his friend often argue a point with which he disagrees.

I was very moved by the logic of this statement and debated the point here in my poem. I’m curious what others think of it and invite your comments. As usual, my poetry carries a message down the spine.

You may miss and drop a ball

Okay! The man can’t be out.

Under the rules a catch can’t fall,

Can’t be a catch if you can’t shout;

Ah got it! Howz dat umpire?

Nodding with certainty.

Now the batsman’s heart can be on fire,

Only the raised finger decides his destiny.

The runs come fast when you don’t take catches,

Dangerous run outs and stumps get lost.

Replacing fielders can save matches,

Or the game can de determined right from the toss.

Put all this together and you will find,

A player cannot drop a catch, theoretically;

Cricket the game of uncertainty has defined,

A drop is a ball that only had opportunity.

To call a drop ball a drop catch is erroneous,

Can we call an idea an invention?

Here is what I say and I think you too must,

A ball is only a catch when it is cleanly taken.
